Empowering Youth

Child in Need Institution Uganda is dedicated to ensuring that the youth, from babies to adolescents, are protected. We recognize that they are key to the future of Uganda, and their success can drastically change entire communities. Ensuring mothers are empowered can also change the trajectory of their children. CINI’s work is dedicated to ensuring that every child and mother has access to education, healthcare, protection, and appropriate nutrition.

Education

Only 4 out of 10 children in Uganda are enrolled in early education. Secondary-level enrollment is five times more among the richest 20% than the poorest 20%. Abuse at school, teenage pregnancies, child marriages, and high school fees have kept many out of school, especially girls.

Every child has the right to education. CINI Uganda helps children achieve, building on the foundations of our projects in nutrition and health. We identify children who aren’t enrolled or are at risk of leaving schooling. Our partnerships with teachers, schools, committees, youth groups, local representatives, and families have helped motivate enrollment. We promote Child-Friendly Schools, upgrade environments, build toilets for girls, and introduce child-centric education methods.

Protection

68% of boys and 59% of girls in Uganda have faced physical violence at least once. Sexual and gender-based violence is high; 17% of boys and 35% of girls experience child sexual violence. Girls are at risk of female genital mutilation, teenage pregnancies, and child marriage, with 4 in 10 married at 18 years and 1 in 4 teenage girls with a child or pregnant. 93% of children also participate in informal labor in fishing and agriculture.

Poverty can lead to high vulnerability to violence, malnutrition, homelessness, and more issues. It is our belief that every child should be protected against such vulnerabilities. We work to increase awareness of their rights, report violations, and create access to child-protection services. CINI has built a strong social movement against exploitation, neglect, abuse, and violence, ensuring that social welfare is linked, capable, child-friendly, and accessible.

Help Us Bring Change

Health

Only 41% of children in Uganda are fully immunized against preventable diseases. Providing quality care to children in Uganda is important to prevent illness and provide cures. CINI bridges the gap between service providers and the community by working with all stakeholders. We ensure that deprived communities have access to information and there is enough capacity to provide quality healthcare.

We have benefited by partnering with motivated and trained local women belonging to self-help groups and community workers. They help facilitate connections with families to provide primary healthcare in local communities. Our extensive community mapping ensures that no one is left behind.

Nutrition

Malnutrition can destroy Uganda’s future. 2.4 million children -1 out of 3- in Uganda are stunted. A quarter of child-bearing women and 50% of children under 5 are anemic. With generally young pregnancies, low-weight babies that are predisposed to malnutrition are born. Access to and cost of a healthy diet can also be an issue.

Protecting millions of children in Uganda by providing meals and food to those in need is our goal. Our aim is to ensure positive physical development among children with appropriate nutrition. We improve sanitation, healthcare, child care, feeding practices, and more to ensure malnutrition can be combated in a holistic way.
